Spotlight On | Now thats a mother of a fish!
I think I speak for a good few Capetonians who would excitedly wait for a home-delivered order of freshly caught tuna during the lockdown weeks, as many suppliers had to find a new client base as their regular restaurants had closed during the lockdown.
But this duo decided to pave the road to home delivery of fresh, sustainable and delicious fish almost a year ago when they launched Mother City Fish using WhatsApp groups to build up a client base.
Ren and Liz, who go back to school days, are the powerhouse behind this small, but successful business proving that good things happen with energy and passion.
They launched Mother City Fish deciding to only sell sustainably caught and local seafood, after struggling to find affordable and fresh alternatives to the local supermarkets. After visiting the fishery and seeing the quality and standard of the fish, along with their passion for the fishing industry, they were committed.
"What started off as a small WhatsApp group for fish eating friends, grew into something bigger. There are a lot of like-minded people out there who enjoy the health benefits of eating fish and struggle to find good quality fish," comments Liz.
They have found that the 'sustainable fish topic' is increasingly important to local consumers and this together with an increased focus on supporting local and small businesses has enabled them to double their client base in just over a year.
This has prompted them to review and expand their product range to include a growing list of locally sourced, organic, and delicious items; all that can be purchased on their website.
Ren, who has an auto-immune disease and has been treating her condition with nutrition, rather than medicine, is always keen to share delicious and easy kid-friendly recipes to pair with their fish.
The team is passionate about sustainable local products of any kind – not just fish – so expect to see a growing list of items that resonate with their values and support local suppliers.
While MCF is currently cape town's best-kept secret, I predict it won't be long before this one gets out.
